BMTA ANNUAL WALK-THRU REPORT, 2007 The following process is suggested for those hiking and evaluating the trail: 1. Carry pen, paper, and the section map (download free from website or request free from Maintenance Director) on your hike. 2. Type each item from your written field notes into this file under 'TRAIL WORK NEEDED', below. 4. Either email the finished file to the appropriate maintenance director (contact them for the email address) with the Subject line 'Walk-Thru Report' or print out and mail to: * Georgia: Tom Keene, 1641 Lucy Drive, Kennesaw, GA 30152 * Tennessee/North Carolina: Bill Lundin, 6412 Waconda Point Rd, Harrison, TN 37341 -- USING THIS FORM -- <> Form text appears in ALL-CAPS. <> Enter information at lines ending with a colon, ":" <> "-OR-" indicates optional input items. <> A superior text editor with line wrap can be downloaded free at http://download.jgsoft.com/editpad/SetupEditPadLite.exe 1. OVERALL ASSESSMENT PLEASE GIVE AN OVERALL RATING TO THE SECTION OF TRAIL YOU HIKED FOR EACH CATEGORY BELOW, 1-5, WITH '3' BEING 'OK' AND '5' BEING 'EXCELLENT'. TREADWAY (1-5): CORRIDOR CLEARANCE (1-5): BLAZES, SIGNS AND TRAIL MARKERS (1-5): OVERALL RATING FOR THE SECTION (1-5): OVERALL COMMENTS: -- TRAIL STANDARDS -- 1) Treadway: At least 18 inches wide with a *slight* tilt to the outside. - Is sidehill work needed? - Are water diversions clear and working? - Any significant erosion damage? - Signs of illegal ATV or horse use/damage? - Any wet or muddy areas? 2) Trail Corridor: 4 ft wide by 8 ft high clearance. - Is brush work needed? - Are any blowdowns higher than 20 inches off the ground blocking the trail? (Give Approximate diameter.) Note: The full 4'x8' corridor may close in some during the growing season. The operative question is, can a tall hiker, dressed in shorts, with a big pack walk the trail comfortably without snagging on briars or brushing against poison ivy? 3) Blazes - All intersections clearly marked going both directions? - Where trail is well defined and there are no intersections, blazes about 150 yards apart? - Are blazes clearly visible and in good condition? - Are any blazes needed? Note: No painted blazes are permitted in designated Wilderness. 4) Signs and Trail Markers - Are signs or trail markers damaged or missing? - Are signs needed? Note: The BMT standard in Georgia is a road sign, each way, at trail crossings of a public road. Also, Carsonite post and trail marker decals about 50 to 100 yards into the woods from each trailhead. In Tennessee and North Carolina, there should be enough signage to easily follow the trail.
