BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR
BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

GA/TN/NC Work Trip November 20
2 Work Trips – The Choice is Yours
Location: Section 12e – Lost Creek Campground to Reliance (4 miles)
When: Saturday, 11/20/2021 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Meeting Location: Meet near the bridge close to the entrance to Lost Creek Campground
Plan for the Day: We will do end of the season brushing; logging (if needed); installation/repair of water diversions (especially on the south end down slope from where the trail departs the road) and if necessary, clean up the primitive campsite . If logging is needed, we will need one sawyer with a swamper. We’ll use brushcutters, swingblades and loppers for brushing; digging tools for water diversions.
What to Bring/Wear: Long pants, boots and gloves along as well as PPE (PPE will be available if needed. Nourishment should include snacks and at least 2 quarts of water.

Driving Directions for GA Folks: From main traffic light in Robbinsville (Ingle’s grocery location) drive 13 miles north on US-129 (if you reach Tapoco Lodge you’ve gone 2 miles too far). Turn left onto a bridge spanning the Cheoah River (FS road 62). Go 100yds.to a sharp right turn (do not go straight) and follow the Forest Service road for approximately eight miles until it dead ends at Big Fat Gap.
Meeting Location: Big Fat Gap – Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock Wilderness
*There is a campsite down Windy Gap trail for folks that want to arrive Friday.
Plan for the Day: Using hand tools only, we’ll clear the Hangover Trail between Big Fat Gap and Saddle Tree Gap.
What to Bring/Wear: Water, long pants, boots, gloves, eye protection, helmet and lunch/snacks
