BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR
BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

TN/NC August 22 Work Trip
Where: Section 16b – Round Top » Sledrunner Gap.
When: Date: Aug 22, 2020, 8:30 AM.
Meet: Cherohala Skyway Visitor Center, Tellico Plains, TN.
What to Bring and Wear: Long pants and boots required. The usual PPE is required (helmet, gloves, eye protection, chaps and ear protection for sawyers). Snake gaiters would be an excellent choice for the brushcutters. We may have a few pair to loan out by then. Bring plenty of water (2-3 quarts or more) and lunch. There is no water available on this section except at Round Top, and even that spring may be dry.
Tools Needed: Chainsaws, gas powered brushcutters, swing blades and loppers.
Non-Wilderness (except for Crew 2)
Plan for the Day: We will meet behind the visitor center in Tellico Plains at 8:30 AM and after a tailgate safety briefing we will head out as follows:
Crew 1: Up River Road to Beaverdam Bald. Barry Allen will lead a team of chain sawyers from Beaverdam Bald to Sandy Gap, cutting out all the trees encountered.
Crew 2: Rick Harris will lead a small crew with crosscut saws down the Brookshire Creek section to get a large tree reported recently on this section blocking the trail. Rick’s crew will then return to Beaverdam Bald and drive the vehicles around to Sandy Gap to pick up Barry’s crew.
Crew 3: This crew will consist of brushcutters, loppers and sling blades. They will hike to Round Top from Beaverdam Bald and work back toward Sledrunner Gap. This crew should be the hearty souls who are up for some punishment.
Crew 4: This crew will also consist of brushcutters, loppers and sling blades. They will hike to Sledrunner Gap from Beaverdam Bald and work toward Round Top until meeting Crew 3.
Crews 3 and 4 will then return to Beaverdam Bald and drive back to Tellico Plains and meet up with crews 1 and 2, perhaps at a restaurant such as the open air downstairs section of the Iron Works Grille for burger and beers or whatever.
Crew leaders should have radios so we can coordinate with each other on the trail. Also, please be aware that the road to Beaverdam is rough and in places quite steep. 4WD high clearance vehicles are recommended.
