BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR
BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
TN Work Trip June 26
Where: Heart of Darkness – Sandy Gap to Round Top – Section 16a – 4.1 miles
When: June 26, 2021 – 8:30 AM
Meet Up Locations:
…Tennessee Volunteers: Meet at the Coker Creek Welcome Center at 8:30 AM.
…Georgia Volunteers: Meet at Home Depot in Blue Ridge, GA, at 6:30 AM.
What to Bring: Day pack with 2 liters of water, lunch and gloves as well as swingblade or loppers if you have them. We also need lots of gas-powered brushcutters and extra fuel. Please bring your personal brushcutter with extra fuel!
Provided: We will provide hard hats, swingblades and loppers for those who do not have their own. We have a few BMTA brushcutters which we will bring as well.
What to Wear: Due to the rocky trail, briars and poison ivy, boots and long pants are recommended.
Plan for the Day: Most everyone will meet at the Coker Creek Welcome Center and then drive to the Sandy Gap Trailhead. Several folks from GA will meet at the Home Depot in Blue Ridge and will drive directly to Beaverdam Bald where they will break into crews, most likely two chainsaw crews and three brushing crews, depending on how many people sign up.
The GA Chainsaw Crew will work from Sledrunner Gap toward Sandy Gap logging out the trail from Sledrunner till meeting the other chainsaw crew. The other chainsaw crew will work from Sandy Gap north till meeting the southbound crew.
- Crew #1: Start at Sandy Gap and work north to the top of Hazelnut Knob.
- Crew #2: Start from the top of Hazelnut Knob and go north till meeting Crew #3.
- Crew #3: The GA brushcutter crew will go to Beaverdam Bald with the GA Chainsaw Crew. They will hike south till getting to the heavily overgrown areas, then start south from there until meeting the northbound Crew #2.
We will desperately need 2 or 3 drivers to take the GA crews to Beaverdam Bald — then to drive around to Sandy Gap to pick them up at the end of the day. These drivers will not do much work, except brushout the short, but steep connector trail from Beaverdam Bald to Sledrunner Gap.
