BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR
BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
TN Work Trip April 24
Where: Section 15b and 15c – Sandy Gap to Tate Gap
When: Saturday, April 24. 2021
Time: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Meeting Location: Coker Creek Welcome Center, 10 miles south of Tellico Plains on TN68, at intersection of TN68 and Joe Brown Highway
Crew One Crew Leader: Rick Parks & Ken Jones – Sandy Gap to Six Mile Gap.
Plan for the Day: After driving to Sandy Gap, we will logout and brush out as needed all except the upper half mile of the trail before reaching Six Mile Gap. This section has a rare plant which prevents us from trail work during the growing season. More than likely we will not be able to use chainsaws by the date of this trip, so any logging out will have to be done by crosscut and/or hand saws. Much of this section is Wilderness anyway. 2.1 miles uphill from Sandy Gap to Six Mile Gap, then return to Sandy Gap at end of the day.
Crew Two Crew Leader: Rick Harris – Waucheesi Bald to Six Mile Gap, then 1.8 miles to Tate Gap, up then down. Return to Waucheesi Bald.
Plan for the Day: We will drive to Waucheesi Bald and hike a half mile down to Six Mile Gap then work south to Tate Gap. We will log and brush out this section. We can use gas powered brushcutters but may not be able to use chainsaws due to the current Cherokee National Forest COVID-19 moratorium. So we need crosscuts, hand saws, loppers, swing blades, and brush cutters. If the moratorium is lifted by then, we will notify those signed up by email.
*Please specify which crew you would like to be on and we will do our best to honor your request. Everyone will be notified in advance as to which crew and what their specific job will be.
Watch for your email!
What to Bring & Wear: Work clothes, work gloves, boots, 2 liters of water, eye protection, helmets, tools and a snack/lunch. We are happy to provide helmets, eye protection and tools for those who need them.
Send RSVPs to Rick Parks at email@example.com or use the form below to RSVP. Near the date of the trip, we will notify you which crew you will be in. Please provide your preference when you sign up, which we will try to honor.
Watch for additional information in emails and on the BMTA website!
After Work Refreshments and a Brew
Both crews will return to the Coker Creek Welcome Center for refreshments with a possible restaurant stop afterwards.
