BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR
BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Leaders: Judy Norton, Steve Cartwright and Keith Mertz
Plan for the Day: We will meet at 9 AM at the Unicoi Crest Overlook, which is 1/4 mile into NC on the Skyway. There is ample parking here. Those without 4WD high clearance vehicles can leave their vehicles here. We will drive through the Beech Gap gate at the state line for about 2 miles to Cold Springs Gap, cutting out any trees along the way with chainsaw(s). Once we reach Cold Springs Gap, we will work our way uphill toward Bob Bald with brushcutters, loppers, and swingblades to the intersection with the trail to Cherry Log Gap, where we stopped working last month. There is plenty of rhododendron to lop and brambles to clear off the trail. We also may take a chainsaw or crosscut saw to get any logs off the trail. We will then return to our vehicles to enjoy snacks and drinks at Cold Springs Gap.
We can then drive to Tellico Plains to check out the Cherohala Skyway Festival and/or eat dinner at the Mexican restaurant next to the Exxon station.
