BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR

BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Annual Meeting – New Hike Offered / Sign Up for Thursday Dinner

Rocky Flats Hollinghead Homesite – Added to Thursday Schedule

A new hike for Thursday (November 2) afternoon has been added to the schedule. It will take hikers on a trek to the Rocky Flats Hollinghead Homesite.

Chris Hollinghead, an English Literature teacher at Tellico Plains High School, grew up in the Tellico area. His ancestors owned property along Rocky Flats Creek — the area that is now the Citico Wilderness. They lived in a simple log cabin and had to make very long, difficult trips down the mountains to Tellico or Ballplay for supplies. For the most part, their food came from hunting, fishing and growing their own crops. Chris’s book, “Papaw’s Tales”, is written from the perspective of his grandfather. The book describes Chris’ relatives’ experiences growing up in the mountains. Chris Hollinghead and Rick Harris will take you on a short <3-mile round-trip hike to the old cabin site and tell you all about it. This hike also is on the docket for Sunday but is full (Wilderness regulations limit the number of hike participants to 12).

Because of this great, new offering, if you already signed up for either the Conasauga Falls or Coker Creek Falls hikes for Thursday, you can change your hike choice to the Rocky Flats Hollinghead Homesite Hike.

Sign up for this hike soon so as not lose out on this unique experience! Sign Up and/or adjust your hike preferences below.

Thursday Dinner at the Iron Works Grille

Following the hikes, we invite all Thursday arrivals for the Annual Meeting and Hike Fest, to join us for dinner at 6:00 PM at the Iron Works Grille. The riverside restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating — it is just a short way up the Cherohala Skyway. The excellent food menu is complimented with beers on tap, wines and mixed drinks.
