BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR

BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Parking at Trailhead:  There should be plenty of parking at the trailhead; however, when we gather at the Coker Creek Welcome Center, we will determine carpooling and lead vehicles to follow to the trailheads.

Plan for the Day:  Based on volunteer response, we will try to work on 2 sections of the BMT. The work will be on 16a (from Sandy Gap NOBO) and on section 16b (from Beaver Dam Bald SOBO) with brushcutters, loppers, handsaws and chainsaws.  We will divide into 3 crews to work the infamous “Heart of Darkness” from both ends.

  • Crew 1:  Start at Sandy Gap working north until they meet Crew 2.
  • Crew 2:  Work from Beaver Dam Bald heading south until they meet Crew 1. Once Crews 1 & 2 meet, they will hike back out together to Sandy Gap.
  • Crew 3:  A few of the shuttle drivers will work down from Beaver Dam Bald and on the BMT for about the first ½ mile and then return to Beaver Dam Bald to shuttle vehicles around to Sandy Gap.

If you have a brushcutter and are willing to bring it, please indicate in your reply.

What to Bring/What to Wear:  Water, food/snacks, gloves, long pants and boots with non-slip soles. Bring safety glasses, hard hats and hand tools if you have them. PPE will be provided for those without.
