BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

May 2024, TN/NC Maintenance Trip May 24-26

Tennessee Crew

Where: 16a-16b Sandy Gap >> Beaver Dam Bald (Heart of Darkness)
Date:  May 24 – 26, 2024
When:  9:00 AM
Meeting Location: TBA

Plan for the Day:  Developing a plan to cover this challenging 6 plus-mile section of trail.

The Heart of Darkness is remote, typically occupied by
rattlesnakes and briars in excess of 6′!

— Snake gators highly recommended —

Volunteers traveling significant distances may want to come on Friday and work for a couple of days.

Initial plans call for attacking from both ends and working toward the middle — we will need help with brushing and shuttling.

What to Bring/What to Wear:  Water, food/snacks, gloves, long pants, snake gators and boots with non-slip soles. Bring safety glasses, hard hats and hand tools if you have them. PPE will be provided for those without.

When you RSVP, be sure to indicate which trip(s) you plan to attend!
