At the Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA), safety isn’t just a priority, it’s woven into the fabric of everything we do. Whether you’re a seasoned trail maintainer or a first-time volunteer, we’re committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Tailgate Safety Talks: Your Safety is Our Priority
Before we hit the trail for any maintenance project, we gather for a “tailgate safety talk.” This isn’t just a casual chat – it’s a detailed briefing designed to ensure everyone is on the same page and prepared for the day ahead. Here’s what we cover:
- Tool Safety: We review proper handling and usage techniques for all tools, from loppers and handsaws to pulaskis and crosscut saws. Safety gear like gloves and eye protection are a must!
- Hazard Awareness: Every trail has its unique challenges. We discuss potential hazards specific to the work area, such as poison ivy, uneven terrain, wildlife encounters, and falling trees.
- Communication is Key: Clear communication is essential, especially when working in remote areas. We establish communication protocols between crews and discuss emergency procedures.
- Knowing Where to Go: We make sure everyone knows the location of the nearest hospitals and how to access first responders in case of an emergency.
Why All the Fuss About Safety?
Our goal is simple: we want everyone to have a rewarding and safe experience while contributing to the Benton MacKaye Trail. By working together with safety in mind, we build a stronger, more united team. Plus, ensuring everyone returns home healthy means they can come back and volunteer again!
Thank You, Volunteers!
A huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to maintaining the Benton MacKaye Trail. Your commitment to safety makes our work possible. Together, we’re making a difference – one safe step at a time.
