BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR

BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Planned Work:  Mitigation/reworking of the trail between Unicoi Crest Overlook and Beech Gap. If enough folks, we will also do brushing and logging out of the section south of North River Road.

Description:  Some of you may recall the huge ravine which developed between the Unicoi Crest Overlook and Beech Gap. This was caused by runoff from the Skyway. It wiped out the bridge 3 times as we moved the bridge further down the ravine as the ravine widened and moved down the hill. We now cross the ravine at the bottom, about 50 feet below where the original bridge was. On the south side we built a switchbacked trail some years back. But we never did the same on the north side. Hikers have to climb up a steep and slippery bank on the edge of the ravine to reach the old trail bed. Our plans, which have been approved by the Cheoah District/Nantahala NF, are to mitigate this by putting in a switchback or two close to the gully to reach the original trail tread safely. Also, there are other areas on this short quarter mile of trail which needs fresh side hilling.

There also are a couple of big trees across the trail just south of North River Road we need to remove and brushing which will be needed in this stretch as well.

Tools Needed:  Digging tread tools such as Pulaskis, McLeods and rouge hoes … chainsaws, brushcutters, loppers and sling blades.

Bring/What to Wear:  Water, food/snacks, gloves, long pants and boots with non-slip soles. Bring safety glasses, hard hats and hand tools if you have them. PPE will be provided for those without.

Exact plans and assignments will be forthcoming once we know who is coming.
