BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR

BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Celebration of Life for Joe Cantwell

BMTA’s Georgia Maintenance Director, Joe Cantwell, passed away June 17, 2026. With degrees in Forestry and Civil Engineering, Joe was well-suited for his job as maintenance director. The trail work completed under his direction will benefit the BMT for decades. His welcoming smiles and cheerful greetings; his willingness to share his time, talent and expertise with fellow BMTAers combined with his ability to inspire them to do more — this is his legacy that will remain in the hearts of BMTAers.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Joe at The Gilmer Arts Center in Ellijay, Georgia, on On October 3, 2026, at 1PM.
