BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR

BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

GA June 11 Work Trip – Changes for June

June Is a Month for Celebrations –

And a Special Request for Help from the TN/NC Crew

In celebration of National Trails Day, we are moving our normal workday from June 11 to June 4, 2022 — National Trails Day!  In recognition of this annual event, volunteers are encouraged to attend either the National Trails Day celebration at Vogel State Park in the Blue Ridge Ranger Distirct OR the National Trails Day work event at Lake Conasauga in the Conasauga Ranger District.

Vogel Celebration
The Benton MacKaye Trail Association; Georgia Appalachian Trail Club; Mountain High Hikers; Georgia Forest Watch and NextGen Forest Ambassadors, organized by Georgia Mountains Children’s Forest Network; are joining forces for the National Trails Day celebration at Vogel State Park. A full slate of great activities are on the docket!

Additional activities are planned between 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM with lunch at 12:00 PM (bring your own lunch). For additional information, contact Darcy Douglas or go to Vogel National Trails Day.

Conasauga Work Event
Team Conasauga will be working to clear the Songbird Trail as well as the Grassy Tower Trail near Lake Conasauga. To join one of the maintenance crews, email Robert – meet at the Lake Conasauga Overflow Parking Lot at 9:00 AM. For additional information, go to Conasauga National Trails Day.


Calling All Volunteers

– We Need Your Help in Tennessee –

Where:  Sections17a-b (Whigg Meadow area >> Pheasant Field Trout Hatchery)
When:  Saturday, June 25, 2022
Time:  9:00 AM
Meeting Location:  Cherohala Skyway Visitor’s Center in Tellico Plains, TN

Georgia Meeting Location:  Blue Ridge Home Depot (Carpool to Cherohala Skyway Visitor’s Center in Tellico Plains, TN.)
Time:  7:45 AM

It will take all the GA and TN/NC volunteers BMTA can recruit to accomplish the herculean task of logging out/brushing out/refreshing blazes on this seven-mile section of the Sycamore Creek Trail.

There’s plenty of work and a job for everyone. Trail workers also will enjoy the benefits of working on a beautiful section with great views (especially from Whigg Meadow). The day will conclude with Chow Time at the Sycamore Creek Trailhead, catered by Chef Patty.

What to Wear and Bring: Minimum 2 liters of water, long pants, boots, gloves and helmets available if needed. Please indicate if needed in the RSVP!
