BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR

BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Parking at the Trailhead:    Travel to Beaverdam Bald, parking a half mile from the top, just before the really steep section of the road. From there, we will walk downhill a short way to the start of the Brookshire Creek Trail.

This is Wilderness!
Tools Needed: Crosscut saws, swing blades, loppers and hand saws.

Plan for the Day: The upper mile was cleared in April, but the lower 2.5 miles still needs logging and brushing out. We will drive to the upper end of the Brookshire Creek Trail (half a mile before the top of the bald). We will break into two crews.

  • Crew 1:  Will go down to the Bald River intersection and work uphill.
  • Crew 2:  Will go downhill to where we turned around in April and work downhill. When the two crews meet, we will return to our vehicles at the top

What to Bring/What to Wear:  Water, food/snacks, gloves, long pants and boots with non-slip soles. Bring safety glasses, hard hats and hand tools if you have them. PPE will be provided for those without.

Watch for additional information in emails and on the BMTA website!

Post-Work Sustenance: Afterwards, we can drive to Tellico Plains and eat wood-fired pizza and drink beer at the new pizza joint on the square, Red Chimney Wood Fired Pizza. Beer also can be had at the new Brewery in town, Tellico Brewery.
