Fireworks are ALWAYS prohibited in national forests regardless of weather or conditions! Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests have fire restrictions in effect. A park-wide fire ban is in effect for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Chattahoochee National Forest lifted fire restrictions 5/4/2026.

BMTA ACTIVITY CALENDAR

BMTA normally schedules four or five hikes per month, some “leisure” hikes that are shorter and easier and some 5 to 8 miles and of moderate difficulty. In addition, we have occasional backpacking hikes and more difficult ones that might be called “hardy hikes.” Occasionally we co-sponsor hikes with other organizations. Some, but not all, of our hikes are “dog friendly.” Although more hikes are in Georgia than the other states, you will find hikes in all three BMT states: Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

August 8, 2026, GA-TN/NC Maintenance Trip

When:  Saturday, August 8, 2026
Where:  Section 8d-e-f (Hatley Gap >>Double Hogpen Gap)
Time:  8:30 AM
Meeting Location:  Home Depot parking lot in Blue Ridge, GA

Plan for the Day:  We will proceed from the Home Depot parking lot to the McKenny Access Trailhead. We will hike in from McKenny Gap (northbound) to Hatley Gap to continue our efforts from July’s work trip (brushing and logging out Sections 8c-d-e).

  • Crew 1:  Needs 1 chainsaw sawyer / 4 workers to brush / 4 to lop

If we have enough for 2 crews…

  • Crew 2:  May access Double Hog Pen from the Flat Top access road and work southbound (brushing / lopping / & logging out if needed).

Bring/What to Wear:  Water, food/snacks, gloves, long pants and boots with non-slip soles. Bring safety glasses, hard hats and hand tools if you have them. PPE will be provided for those without.
