The BMT - A Unique Trail Through the Wilderness

A shining jewel in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, the Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT) offers a unique, peaceful solitude as it passes through three National Forests, crosses six Wilderness Areas and traverses the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail beckons hikers to embark on a journey along its meandering forest pathway with exquisite scenic vistas, glistening, waterfalls lined with emerald green rhododendron and crystal-clear mountain streams.

Maintaining the BMT

Keeping the BMT in tip-top shape requires both maintenance and funding. Trail maintenance includes the physical labor of hundreds of trail workers using a wide array of tools and equipment as well as the lumber for bridges, cribbing and kiosks; paint for marking the blazes to guide hikers on their journey; training for our volunteers and more.

Our Partners’ sponsorships make it possible to achieve our goal of keeping the 288-mile-long BMT safe and open for all to enjoy!
